Press Release
Planting Trees For Peace – Beit Sahour

Tomorrow, Beit Sahour Municipality, the Alternative Tourism Group and a solidarity group from Romans, France, will begin a campaign for peace in the town of Beit Sahour.

Date of implementation:  February 12, 2002 – February 19, 2002

Together we will plant olive wood trees in different locations around Beit Sahour.  In particular we will plant trees on land located close to the Israeli Military camp, east of Beit Sahour, and nearby to Jabal Abu Gnaim where the Israeli settlement of Har Homa is being built.

The main areas designated for the project “Tree for Peace” are owned by citizens of Beit Sahour, but classified as area C, ie totally controlled by Israel. The owners of these lands are denied access to their property and are not allowed to cultivate them as they are concerned for their safety to be in close proximity to the Israeli military camp.  It has been seen in so many areas of Palestine that both settlers and the army often prevent access to farmers or destroy crops, so there is a fear arbitrary and indiscriminate action being taken against them.  Beit Sahour fears that there may be further confiscations of land in this area for the purpose of settlement expansion.

As it is well known to many of our supporters, Beit Sahour has a distinguished history of non-violent actions through the years. On Wednesday we shall begin our campaign of planting trees for peace.  We feel that the planting of trees will not only be a strong act of solidarity between the people of France and the Palestinians, but will also help to justify the legitimate claim to this land by the people of Beit Sahour.

This project is financed by the city of Romans with support from Beit Sahour Municipality.

The implementation of this vital project will be supported by all the citizens of Beit Sahour, young and old.  We all are looking forward to working together with our international friends to prove to the world that peace can only be achieved through peaceful actions.

You are all invited to participate in this campaign, or send others on your behalf.
