Dr. Ashrawi’s service and work has significantly advanced the Palestinian cause. She has also helped transform negative images of Palestinians around the world. As elected member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, Palestinian National Council and Palestinian Central Council, Dr. Ashrawi has been actively engaged in the planning and implementation of programs and systems of reform, accountability and the rule of law. She has built safety and security for the Palestinian people through advocating for peace. Because of her unprecedented good work, the world now sees that Palestinians are peacemakers. Dr. Ashrawi has been an ardent advocate of human rights and gender equality and has made major contributions to peacemaking and nation building. She is the recipient of numerous international peace, human rights and democracy awards as well as the author of many books, articles, poems and short stories on Palestinian politics, culture and literature. Her book This Side of Peace, published by Simon & Schuster in 1995, gained world recognition. She has been highly acclaimed for her work both in education and world affairs.
Since 2012, Dr. Ashrawi’s service on the Advisory Board of HCEF’s Know Thy Heritage (KTH) Explore & Live Palestine Program has been inspiring to her peers and the youth who participate. Through the KTH program, youth in Diaspora traveled to Palestine, where they learned from and followed in Dr. Ashrawi’s footsteps as Ambassadors of Peace. We applaud and honor Dr. Ashrawi’s tireless efforts to facilitate peace and build Palestine.
