• President of Bethlehem University Talks to Congress

The President of Bethlehem University in the West Bank of the Occupied Territories in Palestine, Brother Vincent Melham, spoke to members of Congress on January 28, 2003. P.D. John and Gabriel Habib of the Policy Institute for Religion and State and Robert Younes, M.D. Secretary for the Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation accompanied him. Brother Vincent spoke at the HCEF's Fourth International Conference on the Christians of the Holy Land last October and graciously his offered his availability to HCEF to speak to Congressional representatives on his visit to Washington.

• HCEF Officials to Holy Land for Follow-up on Fact Finding Mission

HCEF will conduct several pilgrimages to the Holy Land in 2002. Arrangements will be made with tourist, transportation and hospitality business groups for the anticipated travel to the Holy Land later in the year. In addition, HCEF will meet with education officials to further develop the goals of the HCEF Child Sponsorship Program. Commitments for the Child Sponsorship Program have dramatically increased in the last year in the United States and arrangements will be made with the Schools to expand the program in the Holy Land. Sales of olive wood handicrafts in the United States have been successful and there is a need to develop the details of a marketing plan for this project with the manufacturers of these items. Finally, meetings will be held with Holy Land churches and organizations to further develop outreach relationships with American counterparts.

• Samir Abu-Ghazaleh, M.D. has joined the HCEF Advisory Board

Dr. Abu Ghazaleh is an active member of many professional medical organizations and has published a number of articles in medical journals. He was recently appointed to the National Cancer Advisory Board for a six-year term. He serves on the Board of Governors for the Arab American Institute. Dr. Abu Ghazaleh is a frequent speaker for medical and charitable organizations. He is a Knight of Malta and is active in the Catholic Diocese of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

• HCEF Holds Successful Conference with over 500 Participants

The Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation’s Third International Conference was declared a complete success according to Rateb Rabie, KHS, President of the Foundation. He stated, “This conference is the most successful thus far. attended the Conference on October 19, 20.

• Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation Condemns Israeli Invasion of the Christian Town of Beit Jala

Reports from our contacts in Beit Jala, Beit Sahour and Bethlehem confirm that Israeli Occupation Forces have invaded the Christian town of Beit Jala early Tuesday morning and have occupied a portion of the town. Invasion forces consist of troops, tanks and armored personnel carriers. Israeli heavy machine gun fire and tank fire have been used to counter fierce resistance by Palestinians who opposed the military incursion into Palestinian territory. Shimon Peres has proposed a ceasefire so that Israeli forces can retire from the village
