Amman – On the evening of March 1 Archbishop Giampietro Dal Toso arrived in Amman where he will take up his duties as Nuncio Apostolic to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. As the news portal “abouna.org.” reports, Archbishop Dal Toso was received on his arrival at “Queen Alia” International Airport by a delegation that included Bishop Jamal Daibes (Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem), the President Caritas Jordan, Rev. Wael Suleiman, and Rev. Rashid Mistrih, a member of the Discretorium of the Custody of the Holy Land.

Archbishop Dal Toso, former Deputy Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and President of the Pontifical Mission Societies (see Fides, 9/11/2017), was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Jordan by Pope Francis on January 21. On February 17, Pope Francis also appointed Archbishop dal Toso Nuncio to Cyprus.
The apostolic nunciature of Jordan, established in 1994, was united with the nunciature in Iraq until 2019. Until then, the papal representative alternated his presence between Baghdad and Amman. In 2020, Slovenian Archbishop Mitja Leskovar was appointed Nuncio to Iraq alone. The Bulletin of the Press Office which on 21 January 2023 announced the appointment of Archbishop dal Toso as Nuncio specified that the new pontifical representative will reside in Amman.

Archbishop Giampietro Dal Toso was ordained a priest on June 24, 1989 and incardinated in the diocese of Bozen-Brixen. From 2010 to the end of 2016 he was Secretary of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, which was later integrated into the Dicastery for Integral Human Development. From January 18 to 23, 2017, Monsignor Dal Toso visited the city of Aleppo, which was badly hit by the Syrian conflict, on behalf of Pope Francis. On November 9, 2017, Archbishop Dal Toso was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and President of the Pontifical Mission Societies for a five-year term, and on December 16, 2017 he was appointed by Cardinal Fernando Filoni, then Prefect of the Missionary Dicastery. Archbishop Dal Toso also followed the affairs of the Catholic communities in the Middle East in his capacity as deputy secretary of the Congregation de Propaganda Fide and president of the Pontifical Mission Societies.
Cardinal Fernando Filoni, who ordained Archbishop Dal Toso, has been Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem since December 8, 2019, who is also committed to supporting Catholic educational and social works in Jordan and throughout the Holy Land.
