Pope Benedict XVI on the last day of his visit to the Holy Land invited all Christian communities in Jerusalem to “contribute generously to the religious and civic life of this unique and holy city”. Later, speaking at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport as he prepared to leave Israel on 15 May, Pope Benedict reaffirmed statements that the Holocaust, “must never be forgotten or denied”. He also repeated his call for a”two-State solution” to the Middle East conflict, with an independent Palestinian homeland alongside the State of Israel.
