1) to a lecture entitled
Arab Christians: An Endangered Species
By Riah Abu El-Assal
On Wednesday April 10
7:30 pm
“In this land made sacred by the footprints of the Price of Peace, our faith is a unique opportunity to reveal the true unity among all human beings.”
Enjoy a rare opportunity to listen to a prominent Christian leader ministering to Anglican Christians in Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and part of Syria. Bishop Riah Abu El-Assal is an Arab-Palestinian-Christian Israeli citizen, building bridges in the midst of widespread political and economic instability.
His faith passed the test of nearly four years under Israeli house arrest for persuading Yasser Arafat, during his exile in Tunis, to send Jewish and Palestinian musicians to compose a hymn of peace in Vienna. For the renovation of his Nazareth church, Riah hired Muslims for stained glass windows, Jews for the heating and cooling systems, and Christians for the stone masonry. Come hear a leading Christian spokesman describe the plight of Palestinian Christians and reveal how religion can transcend ideology and violence.
The Right Reverend Riah Abu-El-Assal has been the Anglican Bishop in the Diocese of Jerusalem since 1996. President Arafat honored him with the Jerusalem Decoration Front and the Committee for the Defense of Arab Land. He attended seminary at the Christian Theological College in Bangalore, India, specializing in Islamic studies. His post-graduate studies were completed at the American University of Beirut.
This event is Washington National Cathedral’s 2002 Claggett Scholar Lecture. It is free and open to the public with no advance registration or tickets required.
