Israel is protesting comments by the Vatican’s justice and peace minister Cardinal Renato Martino in which he compared the Gaza Strip under attack by Israel to a Nazi concentration camp.

The Israelis claim the cardinal’s words are taken straight from Hamas propaganda and ignore the provocation – thousands of missiles fired into Israel – that led to the military operation. Israeli spokesman Yigal Plamor said that making such remarks “does not bring the people closer to truth and peace."
