On April 12, 2023, the Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation (HCEF) celebrated Easter with elders, the students of the Latin Patriarchate School, and members of the Foundation’s Birzeit Social Development and Cultural Center (BSCC).
Christians of all denominations celebrate Easter or the Feast of the Resurrection, particularly the day that ends the great fast, which extends for 40 days, including the Holy Week. One of the most important manifestations of Easter is the holiday mass that commemorates the crucifixion, death, and burial of Christ, in which Christ’s resurrection from the dead is remembered three days after his crucifixion and death, and the time of continuous resurrection begins in the liturgical year for 40 days until Pentecost.
Father Dr. Louis Hazboun, the parish priest of the Latin Patriarchate Church, and the Rosary Sisters – Birzeit, attended the celebration with prayer, reciting the Bible, receiving Holy Communion, and breaking the bread. Fr. Louis then anointed the elders and those present with holy oil and blessed them by sprinkling holy water. He informed them of the parish news and expressed his thanks and respect to the officials and all others, wishing residents of the Holy City of Jerusalem and pilgrims peace and brotherhood.
Following the prayer and in the presence of nuns and teachers, the children of the Latin School presented several artistic and religious quotes and plays that express the feast of Resurrection. The celebration, led by Sister Nadia, included questions and a religious competition that represent the glorious Easter as well as games such as bingo, and riddles. Those present participated in the coloring of eggs, which signifies new life, purity, love, and peace. A meal was then served, in addition to kunafa and chocolate. Gifts were also distributed.
Sir. Rateb Rabie, HCEF President/CEO, extended his best wishes and blessings to all the Christian denominations in Palestine and beyond. “On the occasion of this glorious Easter holiday,” he stated, “I pray that God brings you goodness, love, and peace.” He stressed that this and other religious holidays in Palestine are national holidays.
HCEF extends its sincere thanks to all present and to those who made this event possible, thus bringing joy to the elders and children on this holy day.
