THE VATICAN, October 9, 2024 – A prelate of the Catholic Church of Palestinian-origin has been appointed to the College of Cardinals And will be Created Cardinal, sources confirmed.

Pope Francis has announced a consistory for the creation of 21 new Cardinals from around the world to be held in the Vatican on 8 December 2024.

The named new cardinals include the first cardinal of Palestinian origin, namely Archbishop Natalio Shomali Gharib, who serves as archbishop of Santiago, Chile.

It is to be noted that Fernando Natalio Chomalí Garib is a prelate of the Catholic Church who has been Metropolitan Archbishop of Santiago in Chile since December 2023. He was consecrated a bishop in 2006, served five years as auxiliary bishop of Santiago, and then from 2011 to 2023 was Metropolitan Archbishop of Concepción.

He became vice president of the Episcopal Conference of Chile in 2021.
