The Jesuit Community at Georgetown University and The Institute for the Study of International Migration in Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service Invite you to a lecture and photographic exhibition A World of Refugees – Between Anguish and Hope An account of the situation of refugees today Public Lecture by Mark Raper SJ Visiting Jesuit Chair, Georgetown University, 2001 Former International Director, Jesuit Refugee Service, 1990 – 2000 7.30 pm Thursday May 3rd, 2001 Intercultural Center Auditorium, Georgetown University Drawing on his 20 years experience of service with JRS, Fr. Raper will comment on the challenges posed to policy makers by the contemporary conflicts over identity and the humanitarian crises and mass displacements of people that result from them. He will analyse stages of refugee experiences – such as flight, exile, the search for asylum, repatriation, reintegration and reconciliation – and consider responses which enhance the rights of all. An exhibition of 200 photos from Fr. Raper’s 20 years with Jesuit Refugee Service will be displayed in the entrance to the Auditorium. A reception follows the lecture, to which all are invited. Mark Raper is an Australian Jesuit who is spending the 2001 Spring Semester at Georgetown University attached to the Institute for the Study of International Migration in the School of Foreign Service. Fr. Raper joined Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) at the request of Fr Pedro Arrupe (then Superior General of the Jesuits) and worked in Asia, based in Thailand, during the 1980s. Since 1990 he has been living in Rome as the International Director of this collaborative organization set up by the Jesuits. The mission of JRS is to accompany, serve and defend the rights of refugees. With more than 500 workers, Jesuit, religious and lay, JRS is at work in more than fifty countries in collaboration with local communities. R.S.V.P. At the end of the path you will enter a courtyard facing a red brick building, the Intercultural Center (ICC). Enter the building at ground level which is the 3rd Floor of ICC. Either proceed to the far end of the Galleria and descend the steps on the far right hand side to the auditorium entrance on the first floor, or turn left immediately on entering the Galleria and take the elevator to the 1st floor. As you exit the elevator, turn right and follow the corridor around to the Auditorium.
