“Where there is darkness, Jesus brings light; where there is sadness, He brings joy.”
Press reports have indicated that six months after the massive explosion that rocked Beirut, the Catholic Lebanese found numerous impediments in the way to prepare for Christmas amid the wreckage that overwhelmed every walk of life. This was represented in the acute difficulty pertaining to preparing for a Christmas scene amid the devastation that damaged Beirut. The scenario has changed drastically and life became more unpredictable.
Priest of Greek Catholic rite in Beirut Fr. Nicolas Riachy said, “We made the Nativity Scene with parts of the ruins from tragic accident in the Port of Beirut, last August 4. We want to transmit that in the heart of the destruction, Jesus comes to be born, in the broken windows and doors, Jesus comes to be born, in the rubble and in destroyed houses Jesus is born. Where there is desolation, he brings hope.” He added, “Where there is darkness, He brings light; where there is sadness, He brings joy.”
In spite of the economic difficulties experienced by the Christian Lebanese in making both ends meet, Christmas marked the birth of hope and salvation. It marked the start of a new life based on imminent changes for the betterment of life since where there is darkness Lord Jesus brings light and joy.
Christmas is born in the hearts and minds of the people who seek the help of Almighty Lord Jesus Who can turn desperation into new hope. The Nativity Scene is felt every day with Holy Masses celebrated worldwide that proclaim the birth of a Savior and His death that saves the entire humanity. So no matter where the source for creating a Nativity Scene is, this very scene brings hope and resuscitation to all believers in the mercy of the Lord.
Pope Francis mentioned Lebanon frequently in his prayers. He also hoped to be able to visit this county soon and help extricate it from the current imbroglio it is experiencing. He also wrote a letter to the people of Lebanon expressing his closeness in this time of suffering and appealing to political leaders and the international community to take action and help the nation overcome the crisis.
The Nativity Scene will always be a reflection of a new start regardless of what it is formed. It brings about the emergence of the peace and tranquility as promised by the Prince of Peace.
