The Holy Father, Pope Francis has appointed Rev. P. Hanna JALLOUF, friar minor of the Custody of the Holy Land, Apostolic Vicar of Aleppo of the Latins (in Syria). The religious, who will soon be ordained bishop, is currently parish priest of Knayeh and in charge of Jisser El Chougur and succeeds Msgr. Georges ABOU KHAZEN OFM. The congratulations of all the franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land go to Fr. Hanna with the wish that he will continue to serve the local Church of Aleppo as a shepherd “who has the smell of sheep”.
In the field
Last 17 December, in the Vatican, fr. Hanna was one of the three personalities who received directly from the Pope the “Flower of gratitude” prize, for their commitment to fighting poverty. On that occasion, he had given an interview to the Custody’s website. For many years, Father Hanna – together with his brothers – works hard for the poor in the context of the Syrian war, becoming a figure of reference for the local Christian community. In 2018, Pope Francs had sent a letter to fr. Hanna and fr. Louai, in reply to a letter from them in which they described the situation in Syria. In October 2014, he was abducted and held prisoner for a couple of days by the Jihadists, during the civil war in Syria.
