October 1st commemorates International Seniors Day across the globe and the Birzeit Senior Citizen Center will celebrate this event with festivities at the nearby Latin Patriarchate church. HCEF staff, Suleimah Zabaneh and George Majaj, will serve as emcees of the event which will include greetings from the Ladies Latin Parish Committee, reciting of letters written by local children to the Senior Center residents and remarks by the Senior Center residents, themselves. The festivities will also include dabkeh dancing, songs by the female residents and a group luncheon. HCEF will be distributing commemorative tokens to all senior center residents.

Launched in July, 2005, the Birzeit Senior Citizen Center serves as a safe haven for the elderly population, who, due to the political conflict and travel restrictions, have become one of the more vulnerable and isolated segments of Palestinian society. HCEF and its partners opened the center with the intent of allowing residents to regain their importance in the community and a sense of belonging. The center serves to fulfill the commandment of “honor thy mother and father,” particularly those that have shown courage and faith during turbulent times…those that have persevered to remain in their homeland.
