Amman, Aug. 16 — His Majesty King Abdullah praised the steadfastness of Jerusalemites and their continued efforts to defend Al Aqsa Mosque/ Haram Al Sharif. 

During a meeting with a delegation representing Jerusalem Awqaf Department as well as Jerusalemites and Palestinian figures, in the presence of HRH Prince Ghazi, the King’s personal envoy and adviser for religious and cultural affairs, the King said that supporting the Awqaf of Jerusalem was a top priority for him in order to preserve the holy places in the city.

Jordan, His Majesty added, will continue its efforts to defend the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, preserve the historical and legal status of the city and confront and reject both the geographical and time-based divisions of Al Aqsa Mosque/ Haram Al Sharif.

“During the recent crisis, it was clear that any tension in Jerusalem will have regional and international consequences as the issue of Jerusalem is not security but rather political,” he added.

King Abdullah highlighted the need for continuous contacts with Jerusalemites to coordinate on developments and challenges that might emerge, adding that Jordan was in continuous coordination with the Palestinian brethren during the recent Jerusalem crisis.

His Majesty stressed the importance of intensifying coordination and consultations between the Jordanian and Palestinian sides on the Palestinian issue and Jerusalem.

Members of the delegation praised the important role played by Jordan under the leadership of His Majesty, to support the steadfastness of the Jerusalemites, preserve the Islamic and Christian holy sites and reopen the Al Aqsa Mosque/haram Al Sharif.
