It is from a school path as “open” as possible that the very small Christian community in Gaza tries to start again. The Catholic Institutes – the one run by the Sisters of the Rosary, and the two of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem – welcome about 2100 students, from kindergarten to high school. With one paradox: about 90% of them are Muslim. There are only 176 Christian students.

“We have a very beautiful relationship between us, Christians and Muslims, because even though our school is Christian, the majority of the students are Muslims.
All of them have the dream of getting out of Gaza, but also the dream of getting to know other cultures: this allows them to keep an open mind.”
Among the greatest dangers in this land surrounded by an impenetrable frontier we have the danger of closure. For this reason – but also to ensure a future in and out of the Strip – the study of the English language is at the top of the list of priorities.

“Much of the work done here is based on projects that are often funded by European or American institutions, so knowing English increases your chances of having a better career.”

“It’s the only way for them to get out of this misery, and maybe they can do something big when they get back to their country.”
“It’s not true that they just want to get away from Gaza – teachers and school heads confirm, while showing facilities and activities – because this is their land, the land they love”.

“Our students dream of going abroad, of studying to become doctors, engineers, but then also of coming back to help build their country… they want to realize themselves and help others.
Hopes and dreams have no limits. People can hope and dream, no matter what. One day these hopes and dreams can become reality.”
